In today's fast-paced world, where relationships face new challenges every day, finding a virtual mentor who profoundly influences and guides you becomes an invaluable asset. For me, Abel Mutua, fondly known as Mkuruu, is that extraordinary virtual mentor who has touched my life in myriad ways, becoming a beacon of inspiration, especially in the realm of parenting, despite not having my daughter yet. I have been drawn to the captivating story of Judy Nyawira, the wife of this remarkable individual. Her tale of embracing submission in marriage, even as a successful woman, has illuminated the path to success and harmony in Abel Mutua's life. Her belief in the power of shared financial responsibility and the strength of mutual submission paints a compelling picture of how traditional values can enhance modern relationships, potentially reducing divorce rates in today's ever-changing world.

Submission in the context of marriage does not imply weakness or subjugation. Rather, it refers to a willingness to respect and support one's partner, allowing them to take on leadership roles within the relationship. This mutual respect fosters harmony and a sense of security in the marriage. Judy Nyawira's choice to submit to Abel Mutua's leadership, even when she earns more than him, highlights the significance of putting the partnership above personal interests.

Biblical Perspective on Submission

The Bible offers wisdom on the dynamics of marriage, emphasizing mutual respect and submission. Ephesians 5:22-24 states, "Wives, submit to your own husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." This verse highlights the biblical foundation of a wife's submission to her husband, drawing a parallel with Christ's relationship with the church.

Moreover, Ephesians 5:25-28 reinforces the importance of a husband's love for his wife: "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word. ... In this same way, husband’s ought to love their wives as their own bodies."

The Quranic Perspective

In Islam, the concept of mutual respect and submission within marriage is also emphasized. Surah An-Nisa (4:34) states, "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has made one of them excel the other, and because they spend from their wealth. ... So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard."

This verse elucidates the role of a husband as a protector and provider and the wife's duty to be obedient and supportive in return. It is crucial to note that Islamic teachings promote equitable treatment and kindness within the framework of submission.

In today's setting, the concept of equality is often promoted as the primary goal within marriage. While striving for equality is important, it is essential to recognize that equality does not mean identical roles. Marriage is a partnership, and partners may have different strengths and abilities that complement each other.

Unfortunately, the emphasis on absolute equality without considering individual differences can lead to power struggles within a marriage. When couples prioritize personal interests over the well-being of the relationship, it may result in a lack of harmony and an increased likelihood of divorce.

Judy Nyawira's story exemplifies the power of submission in marriage and its potential to foster success and happiness for both partners. The biblical and Quranic perspectives further reinforce the significance of mutual respect and support within a marital relationship. While promoting equality is essential, couples must embrace their unique roles and strengths, recognizing the benefits of submission in building a strong and lasting marriage. By fostering an environment of mutual respect, couples can reduce divorce rates and cultivate fulfilling and harmonious relationships that withstand the challenges of modern life.
