3000m steeplechase world champion Yavi Winfred, following her triumphant performance at the Zurich Diamond League in September 2023, shared insights into her journey and recent success. The 24-year-old athlete spoke candidly about her decision to represent Bahrain after facing stiff competition in her home country, Kenya.

In a victorious moment, Yavi crossed the finish line with arms outstretched, setting a new Olympic record of 8:52.76 before celebrating with dance moves. During an interview, she reflected on her efforts to join the Kenyan national team, revealing the challenges she faced. "I used to go to the Kenya team trials, and I didn't qualify... It was my first priority; I was ready to represent my country," Yavi told Mungai Eve.

She explained the difficulty of making the Kenyan team due to the abundance of talented athletes, noting that only the top few were selected. Despite her hard work, she often fell just short of qualification. In 2016, Yavi placed third in trials for a youth competition, but only the top two athletes were chosen to represent Kenya.

A pivotal moment came when a Kenyan sports sector contact facilitated her move to Bahrain. With the support of her parents and coach, Yavi embraced the opportunity, even though it brought initial negativity from friends and acquaintances. "It brought a lot of negativity. I was being asked how sure I was that I would go and run well. It was complicated," she shared. Ultimately, her family and coach's support helped her make the decision.
